Available .com domain names, and how often they exist

12%

of the brand names we generate have a free .com. That is not a sample of the dictionary — it is measured on plausible, generated brand names, which is the only population that matters when you are naming something.

One sample, every extension asked for every name, so the four are directly comparable.

The good ones went first

Take 209 published searches: the top five names of each run had a free .com 17.2% of the time, against 26.6% for the bottom five. The better a name scored, the likelier somebody had already taken it — which is why we rank before we filter, so what reaches you is the best available name and not the first free one.

Those two rates are measured among names that already reached a published top twenty, so both sit above the site-wide figure. The comparison between them is the finding; neither is an availability rate on its own.

What .com does not tell you

A free .com is a domain verdict on the date we checked — not a trademark clearance, and not a social handle.

.com has been open since 1985 and is operated by Verisign under an ICANN agreement, which is exactly why so little of it is left: forty years of registrations and no residency requirement to slow anyone down. It renews annually, and it is the only extension here whose scarcity is a function of age rather than of price.

Check .com against your own brief

One sentence about the business. Around 500 candidates screened, .com confirmed free before anything is ranked, and twenty names out with the case for and against each one.

Every search is published at its own page, brief included, and anyone can read it — private searches are coming for paid accounts. Your brief never touches a third-party domain-search widget: we resolve availability on our own infrastructure and never sell your search terms.
